Osgoode’s Part-Time Professional LLM in Canadian Common Law is designed for internationally trained lawyers and law graduates preparing to enter the Canadian legal profession. As a part-time student, you have the flexibility to choose from both in-person and online courses that offer an immersive learning experience focused on Canadian law within a diverse, globally experienced cohort.

A central focus of the program is supporting your transition into legal practice in Canada. Courses are designed to meet the requirements of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada’s National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) and are complemented by academic and career supports that help you navigate the professional, cultural, and practical dimensions of working in the Canadian legal system. The result is not only a strong grounding in Canadian law, but also the confidence and context to move forward in your legal career.

Note: Completing the Professional LLM in Canadian Common Law does not automatically entitle you to practise law in Canada or to be admitted to the bar of a Canadian province or territory. Consult the NCA or your provincial or territorial law society for more information.

We also offer a Full-Time Canadian Common Law option for students seeking an intensive one-year in-person option.

Who should apply

Internationally Trained Lawyers: Practising lawyers with at least two years of legal work experience who are seeking to become licensed to practise law in Canada through NCA-accredited coursework and advanced study of Canadian common law.

Canadian Civil Law Graduates: Seeking to develop expertise in Canadian common law and expand their qualifications for practice across jurisdictions.

Internationally Trained Law Graduates: While the program is primarily designed for candidates with legal practice experience, exceptional recent law graduates with a superior academic record may also be considered for admission.

Our students come from a wide range of industries and professional backgrounds, and we encourage prospective applicants to submit their CV for a pre-application review.

Degree Requirements

The Professional LLM in Canadian Common Law (Part-Time) is a flexible, two-year program that requires the completion of 36 credits over six terms. It is designed to support internationally trained lawyers in meeting the requirements of the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA).

Students develop a personalized study plan, selecting from a wide range of NCA-accredited courses. At least 18 of the 36 credits must come from Canadian Common Law courses. You may choose to complete all of your credits through Canadian Common Law courses, or you can include electives from other specializations and/or pursue an independent research paper aligned with your interests and goals.

Most students are assigned one or more required introductory courses as a condition of admission. The Admissions Committee makes these assignments on a case-by-case basis to ensure that you are set up for success in the program. Condition courses count towards your degree requirements.

Course Offerings:

Click the link below to view our planned course offerings for the upcoming academic year. This chart is updated twice a year – in May and November. Please note that while it reflects our current plans, course offerings, formats, and schedules are subject to change. Students gain access to detailed course information shortly after accepting their offer of admission.

What to Expect

After accepting your offer of admission, you’ll receive information about course schedules. As a part-time student you’ll have the flexibility to choose from both in-person and online courses.

Online courses are generally offered in the evening and take place via live video conference. While not every course is offered online, there are enough online options available for part-time students to complete the entire degree remotely.

In-person courses in the Canadian Common Law specialization are scheduled in a variety of ways, primarily as daytime intensive courses or weekly evening courses.  Courses may be held at our downtown Toronto location or on the York University Keele campus.

Application Dates

The Canadian Common Law specialization accepts new students twice each calendar year, in the Fall term and the Winter term.
