A new year: looking back, looking forward

January 25, 2024

Meghan Thomas

As part of an academic institution, we’re lucky to have two “new years”: the August/September period when a fresh academic year begins, as well as the new calendar year with its sense of renewal and focus on resolutions.

2023 brought a couple of very special celebrations: the 30th anniversary of our Professional LLM in Taxation Law and the 10th anniversary of the Professional LLM in Canadian Common Law. Both occasions allowed us to celebrate the successes of alumni and reflect on the growth and diversity of our programs, from the Professional LLM’s origin as an in-person, part-time program for practising lawyers to a graduate degree with added options for professionals in myriad industries and full-time study opportunities for internationally trained lawyers.

As we move into 2024, we look forward to welcoming students to many of our part-time cohort Professional LLM specializations, which run on a 2-year cycle. We can’t wait to meet lawyers and professionals who work in the Financial Law, Health Law, Intellectual Property, and Labour & Employment fields. We’ll also be taking applications for the next cohort of Privacy & Cybersecurity Law, which starts in Winter 2025.

At OsgoodePD, we’re always working on introducing new programs and courses. Fall 2024 will bring our long-awaited new Professional LLM in Construction Law, the only graduate law program in this area in Canada. We’re also launching a refreshed curriculum in our Taxation Law specialization, with the support of program directors Professor Jinyan Li and John Tobin. In Canadian Common Law, we’re excited to be introducing integrated practical skills courses that will help internationally trained lawyers transition their skills while continuing to engage with Canadian law at a graduate level.

And, because we love reasons to get together, we’ll be looking for opportunities to celebrate, including our 10th annual Osgoode’s Internationally Trained Lawyers’ Day in May and, later in the year, the 15th anniversary of our first full-time graduate program option, the Professional LLM in International Business Law.

We’d love to tell you more about what we have in store for graduate programs and courses in 2024 and beyond. If you’d like to talk to us, come to one of our upcoming information sessions.
