Alumni Spotlight: Colin Robb

Over the past two decades, Canada’s energy sector has undergone significant transformation. Regulatory frameworks have evolved rapidly, sustainability considerations have become increasingly central to business strategy, and companies are navigating growing legal and policy complexity across provincial, federal, and international jurisdictions. Much of Colin Robb’s career has unfolded during that period of change.

Currently serving as Director of Market Analytics and Regulatory with ATCO, Colin has spent the past 18 years working across regulatory affairs, corporate strategy, market analytics, and sustainability within Canada’s energy industry. Seeking to deepen his understanding of the increasingly complex forces shaping the sector, he pursued Osgoode’s Professional LLM in Energy and Infrastructure. According to Colin, the program helped him broaden both his perspective and his approach to leadership at a time when the energy industry was evolving quickly.

“I have spent my career working in the energy industry, and over that time it has gone through a pretty significant period of transition,” he says. “The complexity has increased, along with the number of perspectives you need to consider when working in the sector.”

That complexity was reflected not only in the course material itself, but also in the range of professional backgrounds represented within Energy and Infrastructure program. Colin says one of the most valuable aspects of the LLM was the opportunity to engage with faculty and classmates from different corners of the energy industry, each bringing their own experiences and approaches to the discussions. Exposure to those differing perspectives challenged his thinking and expanded the way he approached problems in his own work.

“The best part of the program was the diversity of perspectives I was exposed to,” he says. “Being challenged by people from different professions and different areas of the energy sector really expanded the way I approached problems.”

The program also strengthened Colin’s understanding of the legal and regulatory dimensions of the industry, which continue to play an increasingly important role in the day-to-day operations of energy companies. In his current role, many of the challenges he encounters require a broad understanding of legislation, regulation, contracts, environmental law, and the wider policy environment shaping the sector. Courses focused on legislative interpretation, regulatory frameworks, and contracts proved especially relevant to the kinds of issues he now navigates in senior leadership positions within the Energy and Infrastructure sector.

Since graduating in 2021, Colin says the pace of change within the energy industry has only accelerated. Governments and regulators at the provincial, federal, and international levels continue to introduce new policies and legal frameworks that create both risks and opportunities for companies operating in the space.

“The energy space has never been more dynamic,” he says. “The amount of legislative, regulatory, and legal change has been pretty profound.”

For Colin, the LLM provided a framework that helped him better understand those developments and respond strategically as the industry continues to evolve. Beyond the technical knowledge gained through the program, he also sees the degree as part of a broader commitment to continued professional growth and lifelong learning.

“I’m always looking for ways that I can grow,” he says. “A big part of that is growing through education and through the opportunities that education opens up.”

As Canada’s energy landscape continues to evolve, Colin’s experience reflects the value of combining industry expertise with advanced interdisciplinary education.
