Did you know that many of our Part-Time Professional LLM programs have intakes in the Winter term? Although most associated September with back to school, each year many students start their Professional LLM in January. This January, we’re welcoming over 100 students into seven different part-time programs. Students join OsgoodePD from a wide professional backgrounds – from lawyers to senior policy advisors, corporate directors, and more. Geographically, our students are spread out across Canada (though there are a few from outside of Canada as well!). We’re excited to introduce you to some students from the incoming class.
Sarah Sheaves, LLB
Professor, Mohawk College
Program: Administrative Law
Sarah Sheaves has demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning. After completing her bachelor’s degree, Sarah became a Paralegal. Sarah then went on to complete a law degree, and many professional development courses. She’s spent nearly a decade training paralegal students and is currently a Professor at Mohawk College’s Paralegal Program.
Sarah has completed OsgoodePD’s Certificate in Adjudication for Administrative Agencies, Boards and Tribunals and was impressed by program, which prompted her to look further into OsgoodePD’s offerings. She ultimately landed on the LLM in Administrative Law because, as her career shifts more towards administrative law, “there could be no other program or learning that would fit better for me right now.” Recently appointed to sit on the Social Security Tribunal of Canada, Sarah believes that the program will equip her to make positive contributions to the tribunal and to make an impact on the lives of Canadians that access the valuable services the tribunal provides.
Rachael Dubini, JD, MA
Senior Associate and Attorney, PwC Law LLP
Program: Business Law
Rachael Dubini is a Senior Associate and Attorney at PwC Law LLP. She has a Master of Arts in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Wayne State University Law School and is a member of the Michigan Bar. Rachael’s primary area of practise is immigration law.
Her interest in business law stems from a desire to “learn more about what drives my clients and understand how I can better serve their needs.” Having a broader background in business law will not only help me understand why and how clients may require foreign talent but also how various activities that businesses undertake – such as acquisitions – can affect their foreign talent workforce.”
Anjalie Astrup-Heber LLB, LLM
Program: Securities Law
Anjalie Astrup-Heberbrings a wealth of academic and professional experience to the program. She’s a licensed lawyer in Ontario, who completed an LLB in the UK, an LLM (in Maritime Law) in Norway. Her professional experience is just as global – having worked in three different continents (North America, Europe and Asia).
Why was the LLM in Securities Law the right program? Anjalie says, “I have spent my career working with capital market license holders primarily in the alternative asset management space in Europe and Asia. I wanted to further my knowledge and understanding of securities rules in North America and this program was a natural choice. From a timing perspective, I have greater flexibility now, due to some of the changes brought by the pandemic situation around the world and decided to take this opportunity.”
Xuezhi Liu B.A., M.Sc.
Financial Stability Department, Bank of Canada
Program: Securities Law
Xuezhi Liu works as a senior economist in the Financial Stability Department at the Bank of Canada. He is a subject matter expert in financial institutions and regulations, central banking and digital currencies. He has a M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics (Financial Mathematics) and a B.A. (Honors) in Economics, both from the University of Western Ontario. Motivated by the opportunity to add a legal framework to his skill set, Xuezhi says, he expects that the program will “broaden my knowledge of interaction among business, legislation and regulatory issues affecting my day-to-day work when monitoring and overseeing Canada’s financial institutions/markets as well as assessing risks and vulnerabilities in Canada’s financial system.”
