Osgoode’s Part-Time Professional LLM in International Business Law is designed for lawyers and professionals who work across jurisdictions and want to deepen their expertise while continuing to work. Through interactive, discussion-based seminars, you will engage with leading practitioners and academics on the legal frameworks that shape cross-border business activity.

A core focus of the International Business Law program is comparative law: how different legal systems approach similar commercial issues. You will develop a strong understanding of the structure and operation of major legal systems, and how those differences affect business transactions, dispute resolution, and regulatory compliance. Building on this foundation, you will examine key areas of international business practice, including cross-border transactions, international trade, taxation, and arbitration.

The program combines this comparative perspective with practical application. Designated electives allow you to tailor your studies to the areas most relevant to your work, and you may also draw on courses from related programs such as Business Law, Intellectual Property, Securities, and Financial Law. The result is a more practical, globally informed understanding of business law that you can apply directly in international advisory, transactional, or dispute work.

Internationally trained lawyers pursuing accreditation to practise in Canada may also select NCA-accredited electives as part of the program.

Who should apply

Lawyers: Seeking to deepen their expertise in international business law or expand their practice into cross-border transactions, trade, and dispute resolution.

NCA Candidates: Internationally trained lawyers with a background in corporate, commercial, or business law who are pursuing accreditation in Canada and wish to complete NCA-accredited coursework while building expertise in international business law.

Professionals: Working in senior international business, trade, compliance, regulatory, global operations, or cross-border advisory roles where multiple legal systems influence business strategy and decision-making.

Our students come from a wide range of industries and professional backgrounds, and we encourage prospective applicants to submit their CV for a pre-application review.

Information Session

Interested in our part-time Professional LLM in International Business Law? In this on demand session, you will learn more about course offerings, degree requirements, what to expect during your studies and the steps to apply.

Degree Requirements

The Professional LLM in International Business Law (Part-Time) requires the completion of 36 credits including a research requirement. The program is designed to be completed in two years (six active terms) through a combination of required courses, electives and up to 12 credits of outside electives.

Required Course

Elective Courses:

At least 18 of the 36 credits must be drawn from International Business Law electives (listed below). You may choose to complete your remaining 12 credits through International Business Law courses, an independent research paper and/or electives from other specializations.

Research Requirement

The research requirement can be fulfilled through one of the following three options. Most students elect to fulfill the requirement through option 3:

  1. A Major Research Paper (70 pages, 6 Credits)
  2. An Independent Significant Research Paper (30 pages, 3 Credits)
  3. A Significant Research Paper (30 pages) completed as the means of assessment for one of the courses within the specialization.

What to Expect

After accepting your offer of admission, you’ll receive information about course schedules. As a part-time student you’ll have the flexibility to choose from both in-person and online courses.

Online courses are generally offered in the evening and take place via live video conference. While not every course is offered online, there are enough online options available for part-time students to complete the entire degree remotely.

In-person courses in the International Business Law specialization are scheduled in a variety of ways, primarily as daytime intensive courses or weekly evening courses.  Courses may be held at our downtown Toronto location or on the York University Keele campus.

In your first term, you may be assigned a required introductory course as a condition of admission. These courses count toward your degree. Students without a JD/LLB are required to complete Introduction to Graduate Legal Studies (note: we encourage students to take this course before beginning their LLM program).

Application Dates

The International Business Law specialization accepts new students twice each calendar year, in the Fall term and the Winter term.
