Meet Our New Students: LLM in Taxation Law

September 28, 2021

Christine Briggs

With both a full-time and a part-time option, the LLM in Taxation Law attracts students from Canada and abroad. Our latest intake of students comes to us from diverse professional backgrounds and includes lawyers and senior tax practitioners. In 2021, the Admissions Committee was extremely impressed by the applications to the Professional LLM in Taxation Law program, and we’re excited to introduce you to two students from the incoming class.

Introducing a Selection of Incoming Students

Sylvio Di Cristofano
Lawyer, Phillips Friedman Kotler LLP

Sylvio is a member of Phillips Friedman Kotler’s commercial law group and is an attorney in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. His primary areas of practice include corporate and commercial law, mergers and acquisitions, and real estate. In his work, he’s found that he’s regularly had to consult with colleagues on matters related to tax law. “I found the answers and solutions proposed by colleagues to be interesting and that piqued my curiosity for tax law – hence the reason I decided to pursue a masters in tax.” He chose Osgoode because of its reputation as one of Canada’s best law schools but also because it permits him to work while pursuing his studies, given that the courses are intensive, part-time, and online.

Sylvia Masiye
LLB, University of East London

Sylvia Masiye is coming to the Professional LLM in Taxation Law from her home country in Zambia. She has spent the last five years at a Big 4 firm, where she provides tax advisory services to multinational companies on international tax and transaction tax assignments. Passionate about tax law, she wanted to pursue a graduate degree that would complement her professional experience. Following her extensive research of program options, OsgoodePD’s LLM in Taxation Law topped the list.

Why was this program the right one? Sylvia says, “the structure of the program allows me to gain knowledge of the Canadian tax system by exploring various issues in tax, including tax policy and tax administration, which I hope to marry with my experiences in Zambian tax law.”
